Phillips, the world’s well-known auction hourse, announced that the Steve McQueen’s Rolex Submariner Ref.5513 would be auctioned on its winter auction 2018. The Rolex Submariner fake with black dial was bought by Steve McQueen in 1960s. After 10 years, he gave it to the Loren Janes, the damn stuntman in his films and the case back was engraved with a letter: TO LOREN, THE BEST DAMN STUNTMAN IN THE WORLD. STEVE.
In 2016, this timepiece was seriously damaged in the fire an then it was taken to Rolex to be maintained. When Janes died, it was delivered to Phillips. But recently, Phillips announced that they would not auction this Oystersteel bracelet copy Rolex as Steve McQueen family raised an objection to the provenance of the watch, the time when McQueen gave this watch as a gift and whether he wore it or not.
Initially Phillips relied on two documents to support the opinion that this Submariner belonged to Steve McQueen: the first one is the letter that Janes signed to declare that the Rolex was given by McQueen and the second was that Rolex service’s restoring confirmation. But the document is lack of many important details to prove the reality of the significant knockoff watch, meanwhile, Janes died several months later, so many ambiguities couldn’t be investigated. At last, Phillips decided to respect the wishes of McQueen family to canceled the auction of this Submariner.
